eBike Battery Care & Protection

Using an eBike for the first time? There are plenty of important things to remember as you head out and about to get the best out of your purchase, something we’ve summarised with 6 eBike tips for every beginner.

One of the most important parts of your eBike is the battery, and at Avaris we’re proud to offer a battery that powers your bike for up to 60-80km of use, which can be fully recharged in just 3-5 hours.

This means you’ll always be able to head out onto the road with your eBike, whether you’re cycling off on your commute, or enjoying some leisure time.

However, to ensure you get the best performance out of your battery, and prolong its lifespan, there are multiple things you can do when charging, storing and using your power source that can keep it healthy. See our complete guide to eBike parts here.

Charging Your Battery

Recharging your eBike battery is as simple as putting your phone on charge. All you need to do is remove it from its slot on your bike, and connect it to your charger. A few hours later, and you’ll have a fully charged eBike, ready to go.

However, when charging your battery, there are multiple things you can do to keep the battery’s health at an optimal level.

It might be tempting to recharge your battery after every ride, but this can often be too frequent and shorten your battery lifespan.

Experts recommend only charging your battery when it’s down to around 30-50% to get the balance right.

To preserve your battery, it’s recommended that you avoid charging your battery to 100% every single time. Instead, you should charge it to a point that will have a convenient amount of power to get you through your next journeys.

However, you should still fully charge it every now and then – guidance says you should charge it to 100% once every few weeks.

It might be tempting to leave your battery charging for a long period while you’re not using it, but this can be damaging in the long-term.

Ideally, you should take the battery off charge

Before and After Riding

Your pre-ride checks should include a look at your battery, and there’s also things to consider once you get back home from time out on your eBike.

It seems like an obvious point, but before you set off for a cycle, you should double check that the battery is correctly in place.

If it’s not connected, you’ll obviously know about it due to the lack of power, but it can be possible for the battery to not be properly attached, but still work.

Check the battery is properly clicked into place and feels secure. It only takes a second, but it could stop the battery from falling out during the ride and gaining some damage.

Once you’ve got home, the first thing you should check is your battery level. If it’s at the right point to start charging it, then do-so.

If your bike has picked up some dirt during use, you might decide it’s time for a clean. Your battery is protected against the elements, but if you’re washing the bike, it’s definitely worth removing the battery first, just to be on the safe side. It also ensures it’s not exposed to any high temperatures, if you’re washing the bike with warm water.

Not using the bike for a while?

If for some reason you’re not going to be using your eBike for while, whether you’ve picked up an injury or are heading off on holiday, here are some precautions you should take with the battery.

If the bike isn’t going to be in use, you should take out the battery and safely store it away.

Leaving it connected but inactive for a long period of time can be detrimental to the battery’s health.

When the battery is disconnected from the bike and charger, you should ensure it is stored in a safe place.

It’s advised you place it in a location that is free from any moisture, and is at an average room temperature. Too hot or cold could cause issues.
